What is Nano Technology?
Nano Technology is the precise and controlled fabrication or assembly of atoms and molecules at Nano-meter (10 m) dimension, into materials and devise with unique properties. 1 Nanometer is equivalent to 1/1000th of a human hair. For example, when a single Nano particle is scaled next to a foot-ball, it is comparable to when a Football in scaled next to the Earth. Nano Technology enabled Paints & Coatings are multifunctional, have robust properties and are environment friendly. The Nano materials form a protective layer due to Van der Waal’s force of attraction. Thus the percentage of
organic polymer content in the paints can be minimized, thereby enabling very low VOC (Volatile Organic Content) for Nano Paints & Coatings. Inorganic Nano - materials are structurally defect-free and this leads to robustness in performance.
So with addition of the Nano materials to the paint matrix many unique properties like Anti Corrosion, Scratch Resistance, Anti-Bacterial, Anti-Fungal and Anti Algae functions are achieved in the paint without using any toxic material like Lead, Chrome etc. Some Nano materials have high band gap and this property is incorporated to provide high UV Resistance, Hydrophobic, Heat Insulating and Elastomeric Paints. Reversible oxidation is another interesting property found in some Nano materials. With addition of such Nano materials, the Anti-Bacterial efficacy can be increased
thereby making a Hygienic Paint, instead of using any toxic materials to kill the bacteria.

- Nano super hygienic coatings/paints prevent airborne viruses, bacteria and repel dirt deposits. These coatings are mainly used for Hospitals, ICU, Operation Theatres, Educational Institutes, and so on.
- Nano heat-resistant transparent glass coatings repel dust, prevent major heat penetration, and insulate homes, cars, buildings, etc. They are applicable on any glass surfaces from facades to car windshields.

COMPOSITES
BALLISTIC/BULLET RESISTANT PANELS
Nanocomposites are materials that incorporate nanosized particles into polymer matrix of composite materials and act as nano level secondary reinforcement. The result of the addition of nanoparticles is a drastic improvement in properties that can include mechanical strength, toughness and electrical or thermal conductivity. The selection of nano particle is according to the property improvement expected in composite materials. The effectiveness of the nanoparticles is such that the amount of material added is normally only between 0.5 to 5% by weight. Nanoparticles have an extremely high surface to volume ratio which dramatically changes their properties when compared with their bulk sized equivalent materials. It also changes the way in which the nanoparticles bond with the bulk material. The result is that the composite can be many times improved with respect to the component parts. There is no limit for application range for nanocomposites. Energy absorbed by the bullet resistance nanocomposite panels is such example of nanocomposites. The high surface area between nano particles and polymer matrix enhances the dissipation of bullet kinetic energy to stop penetration into nano composite bullet resisting panels.
